I am often asked about tummy time and I always stress how important it is. Tummy time is where babies work on building strength and control. Tummy time is pivotal in helping little ones learn to lift their heads, push up, roll and eventually crawl. I am not a fan of having rules, but as a general guideline, I suggest that parents put babies on their stomachs for a period of time each hour that the baby is awake.
Watch this great video of why tummy time is important.
Here are some practical tips for building tummy time tolerance:
- Try tummy time when our baby is in a happy mood.
- Get down on the floor with your baby during tummy time. Sing, use toys and read books to your baby to help distract them.
- Start with short periods of time and build up. It is hard for any parent to watch their baby when they are upset. Remain calm, reassure your baby and watch the clock. Start with a minute (or less) and try adding small increments of time each day.
- Use a mirror to entertain your baby.
